rel=”external” and rel=”nofollow”

December 12, 2007 – 8:06 pm

rel=”external” is the new target=_blank. If you’re using rel=”external”, you could be passing Pagerank to the targeted webpage.

Here’s an example in HTML code: < a href="http://www.abc.com" rel="external">abc.com< / a >

On the other hand, if you do NOT want to pass any Pagerank to the targeted webpage, you would us rel=”nofollow”. As of this year, there’s been a lot of Wordpress blogs and other bloggers that are using rel=”nofollow” because there are some people or SEOs out there that are using the comment feature of a blog to send free one way links to their targeted website.

As more bloggers become aware of rel=”nofollow”, you will see a lot of blogs using this to prevent SEOs from leaching off their website’s Pagerank.
