Intelligent Robots: A New Hope for the Future of Humanity

I was extremely pleased to read about the success of the activation of the new Robonaut 2 (R2) on the International Space Station. The efforts that scientists have put into creating more and more improved versions of intelligent robots are admirable. I remember how thrilled I was a few years back when I saw the Japanese designing intelligent robots.

Their results were captivating at that time and I was actually thinking how wonderful it would be to send some advanced intelligent robots into space. No offence to NASA, but the performance of some of the old probes sent to Mars a few years ago, for example, was less than impressive.

It also intrigued me when I read about the hopes that NASA and General Motors has put into R2 and other future prototypes. The prospect of having robots that are advanced enough to work individually in order to assist humans is quite remarkable.

I often thought about many of the old science fiction books and movies where robots had such a high level of intelligence that they were almost considered to be alive and I never thought I would see the day when technology would advance to that level. With the kind of progress that is being made right now, I truly believe that many science fiction ideas are closer to coming true than ever before.
