The proliferation of online retailers and businesses has made it easier than ever to reach a world of prospective consumers. However, it has also made it somewhat more difficult to differentiate one’s site from the rest. Search engine optimization, or SEO, makes sites more visible to major search engines. Here are some tips for optimizing your site.

The optimum length for a title tag with regards to optimal search engine optimization is usually between 6 and 12 words. If you use less you run the risk of having a page that seems to generic and having more than 12 words will render your title tag too long.

Provide quality content that is helpful to the people looking for the keywords you use to describe your website. The time people spend on your website will influence on how many links they click and how many pages they visit, which influence your ranking in search results. Provide helpful tips and useful information.

One thing you can do in a blog post to increase your search engine optimization is to create internal links in your post. If you are talking about a trip to Europe in the past, link to a former post that talks about it. This will be very helpful in having your readers spend more time on your blog.

If you are running a business online and looking to optimize your website’s search engine performance, it is likely that you spend plenty of time surfing the web. Even when you are not in “business mode,” keep an eye open for good linking opportunities whenever you are online. Opportune places to link your website or new strategies you want to employ can pop up at any time.

Don’t overstuff your article copy with key phrases. While copywriting with SEO in mind is very important, it is also important to remember that robots have not taken over the world. You are still writing for human consumption, so don’t cram keyword after keyword into your article copy to the point where it is unreadable. Layer the keywords in and run a program to check on keyword density to find the right balance.

For the best SEO, be sure to use a domain name that contains your best target keywords. This will help people find you more easily and add to your organic search engine ratings as well as making you popular with search engine bots. Both your website title and your domain name should be keyword rich.

You need to have a site page on your site if you want successful search engine optimization on your site. The spiders need to be able to crawl throughout your page and if you do not have a site page, it could limit the content that they will be able to get to. It does not take a lot of effort and is well worth it in the end.

The fully optimized site takes advantage of search engines’ algorithms and relevancy score determinations to secure more favorable positioning on search results pages. By following the advice found in this article, your company can use SEO to generate significant increases in site traffic from search pages and even from other sites.

Which came first, Internet relevance or SEO? This chicken-or-the-egg question is better used as an answer, a rhetorical answer when someone asks if they really need SEO for their blog or website. If generating traffic is a goal of yours, search engine optimization is utterly critical. We all know about keywords: use them often! Here are some other ways to begin incorporating solid SEO practices into your online venture:

Links, links, and more links. Not just in your blogroll but peppered throughout your posts. No, you’re not steering people away from your site, you’re contextualizing your information. Trust me, your viewers are aware that there are other sites they can go to on the Internet. Linking to them isn’t going to make your readers scared of you, it will make them trust you more.

Add new pages and new content on a regular basis. More pages boost your SEO value and new content keeps you fresh in search engines. You don’t have to get too mathematical about it, but the average frequency with which you refresh your content has a lot to do with SEO.

Social media is your friend, follow it. You should have a FB fan page for your blog or business and use it to network with your faithful followers. You should also be using Twitter in order to drive traffic to your site. This includes tasteful links and hashtags to optimize your tweets.

More links. Inbound links and article directory links are two more ways linking can boost your SEO. Inbound links are links which direct readers to other articles or blogs on your site—it’s basically free advertising. Article directory links require a little more work but can pay off big time. This requires you contacting other sites and directories and having them link to your site in their blogroll or elsewhere. You can and should also submit your URL to website directories like Google, Yahoo, Bing, MSN, and others.

Comment on other sites. Get yourself in the conversation by going to the most popular sites in your industry or field of focus and commenting on the articles. This is a great guerilla method of creating quality backlinks for yourself. Not only will you learn a lot, by leaving your signature readers of one site can migrate to yours.

Guest blog on relevant good sites. Volunteer to write posts on other sites, linking back to your blog at the end. Another great way to get yourself out there.

These are some of the more simple strategies for search engine optimization. But leveraging these tools correctly is anything but simple. It takes patience, devotion, and tastefulness—good qualities to have in the turbulent, unstable world of the Internet.

Is Google becoming more like Bing.com? To answer this question, let’s take a peek at the latest experiment that I’d stumbled upon today.

Unless I’m mistaken, Google likes how Bing.com is displaying their SERP or search engine results page.

In this latest Google experiment, you can see that there’s a light blue box around my listing. Additionally, if you click on the white space next to the listing, you can also see a preview of the intended website or webpage.

This link preview is not a new technology because other companies such as Kontera has been using it for their in-text ads since 2003. Recently, Bing has made it more popular.

Hopefully, what we see today will have a positive impact on SEO. We won’t know for sure until Google rolls out with this new feature.

Back in April 2009, I wrote an article about how important is to get your website listed in popular local directories.

This is NOT a new push from me. Other SEO experts have been talking and getting their clients listed locally for years.

Going forward, I really think it’s important that you get your business listed locally as soon as possible if you want more business locally.

If you have a business, you need to get your website listed in Google Local, Yahoo Local, and Live Local. In fact, it’s important to get your business listed regardless if you have a website or not. Just remember to list your correct business address and telephone number.

I’m almost certain that potential customers will call your business if your business is local to them.

Fast forward to November 23, 2009, and Google has started experimenting with their SERP again. In this case, I searched for “plumbers fort worth”, and I was presented with a different SERP than what I’m used to seeing.

Normally, when I’d searched for “plumbers fort worth”, Google would displayed local businesses in a A through J format above the organic search results. Today, I saw something completely different.

Check out the screenshot:

SERP Google Local

In addition to the local businesses, Google has added a clickable map above the listings of businesses. Now instead of the former A through J business listings, Google is only showing A through E.

Naturally, you could always click the map to see the original A through J or just click on the “More results near Fort Worth, TX” text link below the E listing.

Personally, I think the addition of the clickable map is a great feature because now I can see instantly where I could go or call to get a plumber that is closest to me. This same feature also applies to mechanics, lawyers, and dentists in your local area. Simply use the following format: services + name of city

From an SEO perspective, this new SERP sucks! If you’re an SEO expert that ONLY focus on organic results, and you have not listed your client’s website in Google Local, your client is missing out on a lot of potential customers.

Do a search now for something local to you, and you’ll see that organic listings are pushed all the way down. On my 1440 x 900 screen resolution, I can barely see the first organic listing.

What does this new change mean for you as an SEO or Internet marketer?

Most importantly, you have to get your business listed locally — now. Additionally, you might have to invest some money on Google AdWords to compensate for the possible drop in organic website traffic that you would normally received from Google.

Personally, I’m surprised that Google hasn’t implemented this new SERP sooner. As a service media company, Google could have increased their AdWords revenue by undermining SEO efforts by simply making it harder for local search traffic to find organic results. Consequently, some websites that were ranking high organically for local search keywords will have no choice but to start using AdWords if they wanted to continue receiving traffic to their website.

In short, it appears that Google wants everyone that is listed organically to start advertising on AdWords. Arguably, being listed for free organically in Google is not enough anymore. In a way, Google may be delicately persuading you to pay for your free organic listing, and to start using AdWords if you want to continue receiving more website traffic from the world’s most popular search engine.

Yesterday, Google started experimenting with real time search. As you can see from this screenshot I took, they could be offering 6 different ways to display search results for a specific keyword. The default setting will be “Any time”, which would display your normal search results. I was playing around with the “recent results” link, and that particular link appears to be the real time that we’ve all been waiting for. All of the other text links in the left menu on are self explanatory.

Last but not least, I especially liked the ability to specify a date range. From an SEO perspective, you can look back in time and see what your competition was doing 6 to 12 months ago. This insight into the past allows an SEO to turn back the clock, if you will, and see what has changed in terms of search algorithm.

With so much information at our fingertips from Google, I see a new era in SEO that will allow seasoned SEOs’ to better optimize their client’s websites and drive more traffic to other webpages beside the typical homepage. Stay tune for more coverage on this new and emerging trend in the world of live search.
