Energy drinks – A source of energy or not?  

Energy drinks can be found in the canned or bottled form and is available in all kinds of grocery stores, night clubs, and bars. These drinks are mainly carbonated drinks with added amount of caffeine, sugar, B-vitamins, amino acids, and herbal stimulants. The consumers for these drinks are usually between ages 18-30 who consume it as a stimulant.

  • B-vitamins are added to energy drinks in small amounts.
  • Taurine, a constituent of energy drinks plays an important part in muscle contraction and the nervous system. It can cause arterial blood pressure.
  • Some types of energy drinks contain Guarana, an additional source of caffeine. 

Abstain from mixing energy drinks with alcohol: 

Though alcohol in combination with an energy drink significantly reduces symptoms such as dry mouth, head ache, weakness etc, motor co-ordination and reaction time was seen to be affected. So the combination of energy drinks such as Red Bull with alcohol like vodka may also induce a person to consume more alcohol. 

Do not confuse sports drinks and energy drinks: 

Energy drinks should not be consumed after rigorous exercise. While sports drinks replenish the lost nutrients and sugar content in the body, energy drinks tend to lead to dehydration by acting as a diuretic. This is due to the caffeine content in the energy drinks. 

While some energy drinks can be good for you, you must be aware of what you are drinking. You must not be carried away by false claims like improved performance and concentration. These energy drinks cannot be considered natural alternatives either. You have to always keep in mind that they are highly caffeinated drinks which will have potential bad effects when consumed frequently. These drinks are widely targeted for the young consumers and are available on and off campus also. Those who lead a very active lifestyle like rock stars and athletes are also consumers of these energy drinks which have Gingko, Ginseng and milk thistle also as its ingredients. Most of these energy drinks are served chilled and are available in many flavors.
