Acyclovir: A drug used to treat herpes, shingles and chickenpox

Warnings/Precautions

It could also result in symptoms akin to reversible central nervous system which have been observed in patients being treated with acyclovir intravenously. In case of adverse reactions or sudden pregnancy the patient should immediately consult their doctor. Those who are pregnant and intend to nurse their babies while they are on Acyclovir tablets should also have to consult with their doctors.
There is no information on the results of treatment for Herpes Zoster which has been started later than 72 hours of the rash appearing. It is always better to start treatment as soon as possible as this will show better results.
Genital Herpes cannot be cured with Acyclovir tablets.
Chickenpox is usually milder in children and more sever in adolescents and adults. The rash is controlled more effectively if the treatment is started during the first 24 hours of the chickenpox rash appearing. It is not known what the consequences will be if the treatment is started later.
Missed Dose
In case a dose is missed it is better to take it as soon as you realize it. However, if it is time for the following dose already then just skip the previous dose and take the present one. Never take a double dose just because you have missed one.
Possible Side Effects
Most side effects are related to the dosage and the kind of infection that is being treated. In case there are any discomforts and side effects like tiredness or weakness which is not normal, pain in the stomach, hives or rashes on the skin, seizures, not enough urine being passed, blistering or peeling of the skin in the mouth and on the body, redness, excessive thirst, hallucinations or confusion you should inform your doctor immediately. For milder side effects you need not bother unless they bother you too much and do not stop. These side effects are nausea and vomiting, low appetite, hyper sensitivity to the sun, headache, dizziness and diarrhea.
Storage
This medication should be protected from light and kept in a cool dry place at a temperature of around 150 to 250C. All medicines that have expired should be disposed of. Be careful to keep all medications well out of the children’s reach.
Overdose
If an over dose has been taken it will result in symptoms like increased lethargy, seizures, coma and agitation. Sometimes an overdose could happen in patients whose electrolytes and fluid intakes have not been monitored properly and who are on an inappropriately high dose of this drug. Such cases result in elevated serum creatinine and BUN which leads to renal failure. A solution for this could be hemodialysis until the patients renal system returns to normal.
